What Is Metrology? What Does It Involve?

Most people who work in science and medicine work in metrology every day but few know what metrology is. Metrology is the science of measurement and its primary application, and NIST is the agency that regulates the national Metrologic system. It is mainly used to standardize measurements for different business practices. The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s work within metrology focuses on advancing measurement science to help enhance economic security and improve the overall quality of life. Metrology and its Relation to NIST Research

Almost all NIST research has a metrology component involved in it. NIST’s metrology-related activities and resources include calibrations, standard reference data, reference materials, professional training, proficiency evaluation materials, and tools to help evaluate measurement uncertainty. Their resources and activities also include measurement quality assistance programs along with laboratory accreditation services that help people establish traceability of measurement results. One crucial component of NIST’s metrology work is the metrological traceability, which will require the establishment of an unbroken chain of different calibrations to specified reference measurement standards, typically international and national standards, in particular the realizations of the measurement units of this International System of Units, otherwise known as SI for short. The National Institute of Standards and Technology will assure the traceability to the System of Units, or towards other specific standards of measurement results that the NIST provides, either directly or through an official NIST program and collaboration. Metrological Traceability

Metrological traceability’s definition has achieved global acceptance within the metrology community, and it is stated within the International vocabulary of metrology. It is essential to remember that traceability is the leading property of the results of a measurement and not instruments, calibration reports, or laboratories. It is not achieved by following one particular procedure method or using specific equipment. Just having an instrument calibrated, even by NIST, is not enough to make the measurement results obtained using that instrument traceable into the different realizations of the suitable System of Units or other specified references. The measurement system by which values or other uncertainties are transferred has to be understood clearly and under the correct quality control.
