GLP and GMP Pipetting: Know your Compliance

GLP and GMP Pipetting: Know your Compliance

While developing or testing your medical devices or pharmaceuticals, the question is: are you following the correct methods for current GLP or GMP practices?

While developing or testing your medical devices or pharmaceuticals, the question is: are you following the correct methods for current GLP or GMP practices? GLP stands for good laboratory practices, and GMP stands for good manufacturing practices; GXP is an acronym used to refer to both quality systems. Quality systems and standards regulating product development and manufacturing of medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and clinical studies, like GLP, GMP, and ISO 9000 series, all require standard operating procedures. The quality system includes consistent and documented maintenance and calibration methods for all lab instruments. In today’s blog, we’ll look at some principles and tools that can help with these demanding regulations and requirements, especially regarding pipetting. Read on to learn more!

Checking Compliance with Standard Operating Procedures

Ensuring compliance with your current SOPs is essential for GLP and GMP code compliance. SOP compliance means repeating the set work instructions in the laboratory without any deviations. Many other processes in the workspace are already entirely or semi-automated, and this type of assistance is also available for different lab work. Electronic pipettes simplify and speed up the work by allowing the integration of SOPs into programmable pipetting protocols. Once they’re activated, the program will automatically adjust the parameters after every completed step. Automated pipette programs will reduce the possibility of apparent human error when manually adjusting the pipette’s parameters. The programs can then be password protected to help add an extra layer of security and ensures laboratory personnel performs the correct protocols. Electronic pipettes increase the pipetting performance efficiency and repeatability of dispensing liquids.

How to Ensure Instruments are within Calibration?

Has somebody in your laboratory ever forgotten to calibrate their pipettes before the calibration due date set in your SOPs? Many laboratories have equipment sticker labels on their pipettes, with pipette calibration due dates. However, these labels don’t provide notification reminders, so it’s easy to forget. A few electronic pipettes, like Sartorius, can be set to help enforce proper calibration intervals by using a calibration reminder option. With some help of the reminder, you’ll be aware of pipettes in the laboratory with expired calibration, which will save you from the headache you experience when your work is not able to be completed due to uncalibrated pipettes. Trained service personnel can set the last calibration date into the pipette software. You could also set a calibration interval, after which the pipette will notify you of an upcoming calibration.
